about

"Roy Powell, whose trio opened the show, is the Brit who made the unusual move from Lancashire to Norway, home of all things cutting edge. His piano style, though, remained surprisingly traditional. There was no electronica, no beat boxes, just acoustic double-bass, drums and the kind of technique that recalled early Bill Evans and that legendary octave-improve king, Phineas Newborn."
- Jack Massarik, London Evening Standard

Reviews for Roy Powell – Solace (NHCD 2036):

"He’s flowing, lyrical and underplaying it for all he’s worth ‘it is my belief that in such times as these the need for beauty is greater than ever’ he states in his brief note and it’s difficult to disagree."
- Brian Priestly, Jazzwise

"Roy Powell’s Solace (Nagel Heyer) works the angles of a song’s potential, this time with even more emphasis on the tone, mood and space,The title track, a slow-as-molasses melody that combines thick lines with fluid ones, is pretty without being syrupy. With sensitive support from bassist Terje Gewelt and drummer Jarle Vespestad. Powell’s set of nine originals resists the bebop urge to blow, instead remaining as calm as an easygoing river. Some may find the tempos and the sometimes cloying expressions maddening if not indulgent. Powell’s long form melodics and seeming waywardness is most creative and refreshing on tunes like “Another Time Another Place”, “Loves’s Circles” and the relatively uptempo , Latin flavoured “My Beatrice”."
- John Ephland, Down Beat (four stars)

"Roy Powell plays Ronnie Scott's, London, next week, and this Oslo-based British pianist will probably be adopting the pensive, jazzier style he does on this trio disc - having explored more cross-genre variations on the jazz tradition, particularly funk and fusion, in the past.
Once again, this is a piano-trio set in which the familiarity of sensitive players to each other is crucial to the impact, Powell working with two skilful sidemen from his adopted country, bassist Terje Gewelt and drummer Jarle Vespestad.
This is close to the Bill Evans tradition of thoughtful three-way jazz, with Powell demonstrating both a formidable technique and a delicate care for melody..."
- John Fordham, The Guardian
